Information about Taekwondo Belts and Ranks

Taekwondo is a martial art that progresses within a specific training discipline and system. Taekwondo practitioners use a grading system based on belts to demonstrate their expertise and progress. Belts are used to describe the technical and theoretical knowledge and skill levels of Taekwondo practitioners.

Taekwondo Belts and Their Meanings

In Taekwondo, belts are divided into two main categories:

  1. Belts (Group Ranks) for Students and Beginners in Taekwondo
  2. Belts (Dan Ranks) for Masters and Advanced Taekwondo Practitioners

Grade Levels for Students and Beginners

Beginner Taekwondo athletes start training with a white belt and progress through the ranks, earning different colored belts throughout their training.

  1. Group 10 - White BeltThis is the beginner level of Taekwondo. It symbolizes purity and openness to learning.
  2. Group 9 - White Belt with Yellow TipThis indicates that basic techniques have begun to be learned.
  3. Group 8 - Yellow BeltThis indicates that the athlete has made progress in fundamental skills.
  4. Group 7 - Yellow Ribbon with Green TipThis indicates that the techniques are beginning to be built on a more solid foundation.
  5. Group 6 - Green BeltThis indicates that the athlete's technical knowledge and skills have improved.
  6. Group 5 - Blue-tipped Green RibbonThis indicates that more advanced techniques have begun to be learned.
  7. Group 4 - Blue BeltThis indicates that techniques are better controlled and improvement is being made.
  8. Group 3 - Red-tipped Blue RibbonThe athlete has reached a level approaching black belt.
  9. Group 2 - Red BeltThe focus is on advanced techniques and fighting strategies.
  10. Group 1 - Red Ribbon with Black TipThis is the final student level before black belt. Technical mastery and discipline are at the highest level.

Master Generations (Dan Ranks)

The progression from student to master level begins with the black belt. The black belt represents the advanced levels and mastery of Taekwondo. Black belt ranks are called "Dan".

  1. 1. DanThis is the basic master level. It indicates that the student can now practice taekwondo at an advanced level.
  2. 2nd Dan: The level at which technical skills and teaching abilities have developed.
  3. 3rd Dan: Preparation stage for advanced fighting techniques and coaching level.
  4. 4th Dan and aboveThis is the Master level. Athletes at 4th Dan and above can obtain the "Master" title and work as coaches.
  5. 5th Dan - 9th DanThese skills represent high levels of expertise and are particularly necessary for teaching and organizational leadership.
  6. 10. DanThis is an honorary and the highest level rank. It is usually awarded to masters who have made significant contributions to taekwondo.

The Taekwondo belt system is an important system that encourages disciplined training and helps track the progress of athletes. Athletes earn the right to advance to the next level by learning and applying the techniques specified at each belt. Each belt symbolizes an achievement attained through patience, perseverance, and disciplined work.
