Niğde Reformer Course: 12 Lessons per Month, 18:00-19:00
Reformer Pilates, which was mainstream in gyms in the 1980s, is back with full force! This once-popular exercise is now available as an option in almost every gym. So, are you ready to learn what reformer Pilates is and what effects it can have?
For many people, exercising is generally seen as a tiring activity. Therefore, home workouts are often preferred over gym workouts. However, this is changing with a recent exercise trend! Thanks to world stars who have publicized their use of this exercise, reformer pilates has made a comeback in recent years. So, let's take a closer look at what this much-talked-about exercise is and what it's all about.
1. What is Reformer Pilates and what are its benefits?

Because equipment is the priority. Pilates equipment also called reformer pilatesThis method is now preferred by those who want to stretch and tone their bodies. Introduced by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century, this exercise is known to have been used during World War I to aid in the treatment of wounded soldiers in bed.
Reformer Pilates, unlike mat Pilates, utilizes specially designed equipment.
This specialized equipment, called a reformer, aims to improve strength, flexibility, and balance by using the body's own weight. The exercise also helps correct posture by promoting proper body positioning through coordinated movements that focus on diaphragmatic breathing.
The springs used in Reformer Pilates can be individually adjusted to the person's body, height, age, and musculoskeletal system. This makes the exercise suitable for both beginners and advanced practitioners. Thanks to the variety of movements, Reformer Pilates can have positive effects not only on a physical level but also on a mental level.
2. What are the pieces of equipment used in Reformer Pilates?
Reformer Pilates gets its name from a versatile piece of equipment that might seem rather complex at first glance. This equipment, called a reformer, resembles a bed with a flat platform and wheels. This frame, called a sled, is attached to one end of the machine with a series of springs. As the frame moves on the wheels, these springs provide resistance. The reformer also includes a footbar, long straps that can be used by the legs or arms, and blocks to support the head and shoulders to minimize the risk of injury.
3. How to do Reformer Pilates?
Reformer Pilates, thanks to its special bed-like equipment, allows for a wider range of motion than Pilates done on a mat. This exercise can be performed lying on your back or side, sitting, standing, pulling the belts, pushing the foot bar, sitting on shoulder blocks, hanging upside down, and so on. In short, it makes it possible to work out in a wide variety of positions. The equipment can also create resistance, making exercises that are not possible on a mat easier or more difficult.
4. What are the benefits of Reformer Pilates?

Reformer Pilates, which yields faster results than mat-based Pilates, helps improve overall fitness and keep the body in shape. In addition, this exercise is said to have many benefits for stress management and mental relaxation. Let's take a closer look at the benefits of reformer Pilates:
4.1. Full Body Workout
Reformer Pilates makes it easy to strengthen the entire body by focusing on weak muscles. It also targets smaller muscle groups, allowing for flexible muscles with low body fat. This workout includes many movements that focus on the arms, legs, hips, and shoulders.
4.2. Controlling Body Resistance
The resistance created by the reformer springs can be adjusted as needed during use. This means the springs can be used more flexible or tighter. For example, someone who struggles with squats can lie on their back on the reformer and perform squats without straining their knees too much or having to exert extra effort to balance their body. Furthermore, those who prefer to use their body weight while squatting can choose the heaviest springs on the machine to test their muscles!
4.3. Improving Posture and Maintaining Balance
Most reformer exercises target the core muscles (muscles stretching from the lower rib cage to the hips) that support ideal posture. Therefore, reformer pilates helps straighten the spine, improves body balance, and can also help resolve problems caused by poor posture.
4.4. Ensuring Joint Safety
Reformer Pilates allows exercises to be performed while sitting or lying down. This reduces the load on the muscles caused by gravity, making it possible to move without overstraining the muscles. Thanks to this sensitivity, it helps people with certain physical challenges to perform high-impact workouts more safely and painlessly. Of course, it is essential to perform these exercises under the supervision of a professional.
4.5. Providing Enjoyable Exercise Opportunities
Because the equipment used in reformer pilates can look a bit intimidating, individuals may initially be hesitant about this exercise. However, after gaining experience on the reformer, it becomes quite enjoyable. Reformer pilates, which allows for creativity through the variety of movements, helps individuals realize that they are improving, getting stronger, and gaining control over their own bodies day by day.
5. Does Reformer Pilates help with weight loss?

A 2015 study published in Women's Health focused on a group of women who performed two hours of reformer pilates workouts per week for four weeks. At the end of the process, the women showed a slight loss of fat in their arms, waist, and thighs, and a decrease in muscle fat. However, while reformer pilates can help burn fat, its primary focus isn't weight loss. This is because the exercise doesn't raise the heart rate enough to burn a significant amount of calories.
