ABOUT HASANDAĞI:
Hasandağı, or Hasan Dağı, is a volcanic mountain with a peak reaching 3268 meters above sea level.
There are two large craters, Büyük Hasan and Küçük Hasan. The majority of the Melendiz mountain range is formed from the lava flows that erupted from these two craters. Büyük Hasan has a well-preserved main crater and parasitic cones around it. The summit of Küçük Hasan is in a Somma state, meaning there are remnants of the steep slopes that formed the boundaries of the old caldera. Thanks to these, it is possible to deduce the shape of the first crater. The andesite and basalt lavas that erupted from the aforementioned crater flowed northward, spreading over a wide area, while the tuffs reached as far as the Kızılırmak River.[1] This mountain is located within the borders of Aksaray and Niğde provinces. It is covered with oak forests up to 1750 meters. Various Turkish tribes, especially the Yörük people, live on and around the slopes of the mountain. Büyük Hasan (3268 m), which forms the main volcanic cone, rises abruptly from the Aksaray Plain to the northwest, the Obruk Plateau to the west, and the Bor Plain to the south, presenting a somber natural monumental image. The summit of this main volcanic cone consists of a typical crater, and there is a crater lake at the bottom of the crater. The smaller, lower-elevation twin cone, located immediately southeast of the main cone, is known as Küçük Hasan Dağı (2844 m). The summit of this volcanic cone is also a typical crater. The Hasan Dağı volcanic unit, which is among the youngest volcanic mountains in our country with its relatively fresh and characteristic volcanic formations, continues its slumber since ancient times. The ancient Roman city of Nora is located at the foot of the mountain. It is the highest mountain in the Central Anatolia Region after Mount Erciyes.[2]
The mountain has the appearance of a typical volcanic cone, formed from materials ejected in various phases. Basically, andesites form the skeleton of the cone, with basalt flows on top of them. In recent times, young basalt flows and basalt cones (ash cones) have formed from fissures in older lava flows. There is a crater on the main vent at the summit of the mountain, and parasitic cones on the eastern slopes. On the slopes of the mountain, valley-shaped gorges have been formed by erosion that occurred in the Quaternary period. Melendiz Mountain is located very close to Hasan Mountains. This mountain also shows similar characteristics to Hasan Mountain in terms of formation time, structure and shape. Karacadağ, Meke Dağı and Karadağ, located south of Lake Tuz, are other volcanic cones on the same line as Erciyes Mountain and Hasan Mountain.[3]
